Venue Details​​

We are pleased to return to Stony Brook University, located at 100 Nicolls Rd, Stony Brook, NY 11794, for the 2026 State of the Science. Stony Brook is situated on a 1,039-acre site on the north shore of Long Island, and is approximately 60 miles east of New York City. ​Conference sessions will be taking place in the Student Activities Center and Wang Center.

Parking and Shuttles

There is accessible and free parking for State of the Science attendees on campus. A conference shuttle bus will also run between off-campus hotels and the Student Activities Center.

Getting to Stony Brook

Driving

From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left. To find the campus via GPS, enter the address "100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, NY 11794."

Public Transportation

By Bus - Suffolk County Transit provides public transportation throughout Suffolk County including to Stony Brook's campus. More information can be found here

 

By Train - Long Island Railroad's Port Jefferson line runs from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; campus shuttle services provide service to the central campus. Trains to and from Penn generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some lines. The train schedule can be found here

 

By Ferry  - There are two car ferries that cross Long Island Sound:

Airports

MacArthur Airport is the closest airport to Stony Brook, located in Islip about 15 miles away. It is most accessible by car (rental counters are available at the airport), though from the the airport you can also take the Suffolk County Bus S57 (schedule) to the Smith Haven Mall (final stop). There you can transfer to the S60 (schedule), where you will get off at the University Administration Building, or the 3D (schedule), where you will get off at the University Student Union. Alternatively, shuttle service is available from Spartan Limousine, which can be reserved by calling 631-928-5454.

Driving directions to Stony Brook University from Islip-MacArthur Airport: Exit the airport and turn left onto Veterans Memorial Highway (Route 454 West). Merge onto Sunrise Highway (Route 27) and take the second exit onto Nicolls Road. Drive north for 12 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left.

 

Other airports

New York City Area Airports (JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark) are approximately 50-60 miles to the west.

  • Ubers and other car services are available at all airports. 

  • From JFK you can take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station and transfer to the Long Island Railroad for the train to Stony Brook (take the Port Jefferson line).

  • From LaGuardia Airport you can take a taxi for approximately $12 - $14 to the closest Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train station: the Woodside train station. From Woodside, you may take the LIRR to Stony Brook by transferring at the Jamaica train station.

  • From Newark, first take the AirTrain, which will take you to the Newark Airport Train Station, then you will take the New Jersey Transit train. The train ride from Newark Airport Train Station to Pennsylvania Station takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. From Pennsylvania Station, you can take the Long Island Rail Road to Stony Brook.
